Every year, the media is filled with stories relating to workplace incidents. However, it appears that a number of these industry related incidents are not a simple, unfortunate event but are often a direct result of improper or lack of adequate training.
The recession has had a massive impact on the industry that in many cases has caused business owners to make some ruthless budgetary cuts. Training, in particular refresher training, can be regarded by some to be an area of their business they can affordably abandon. Costing as little as £95 per candidate, refresher training is a small expenditure but many opt to disregard this with disastrous and costly effects.
Investing in refresher training is beneficial for both operators and employers alike.
For an operator, refresher training can ensure that their skills and abilities are kept at the required, safe level and keeps any bad habits in check. As an employer, removing this area of an operator’s development could incur huge costs because of damaged stock, downtime due to injuries or in more severe cases, even the death of an individual. In these instances, these costs could be within the region of £10,000s and in some cases could even result in the closure of your business.
The message here is clear: cutting corners will not help you to cut costs. Not only will the elimination of refresher training greatly put the safety of your workers at risk, but may also put the future of your business in jeopardy. The question is simple: is it really worth the risk?

The Independent Fork lift Truck Association (FLTA) has circulated a list of industries, which have the most improved record of forklift accidents and also the worst accident record.
Warehousing & Storage sector has a massive improvement of 80% over the past 10 years, still no room for complacency.
The road freight has had an increase of 237% which means it has moved from being the fifth worst seven years ago to now being the worst industry for forklift accidents in the UK.
These figures only represent those, which have been reported to HSE under RIDDOR resulting in three or more days off work, they do not include all the near misses, smaller incidents or those that just were not reported. The HSE believes non-fatal injuries are substantially under-reported, meaning the true accident toll could actually be much higher.
Forklift truck accidents can and often do cause serious injury and sometimes are fatal, managers have a legal and moral duty to ensure safe working systems, good equipment and proper training are in place.
No one should ever operate a Forklift truck if they have not received training and are competent to operate the forklift safely.
When the pressure is on and deadlines fast approaching, drivers often take short cuts, which is when accidents happen, with very costly and serious consequences.
It is recommended that all forklift operators receive a one-day refresher-training course at least every three years or sooner following an accident or near miss.
Refreshing training identifies and corrects any bad habits picked up during the working environment, and reinforces vital health and safety requirements and updates operators on any new legalisation and guidance. Thus making the operator a much safer fork lift driver, safe drivers have fewer accidents and work more efficiently which in the long terms saves companies money and people’s lives.
Do not risk lives, get proper training for all your fork lift drivers.

Professional drivers urged to exchange their paper driving licence
Publisher: Driving Standards Agency

Published date: 18 October 2011
Type: Press release

Mode/topic: Roads, Freight transport,Road safety, Road transport,Vehicles

From 18 October bus, coach and lorry drivers holding a British paper driving licence are asked to exchange it for a photo card licence in order to receive their driver qualification card (DQC) at no cost.
The DQC proves that a driver holds the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) which professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must now legally hold in addition to their driving licence.
Drivers with a photo card licence will receive their DQC automatically, as the same photograph can be used for both documents. While drivers will still have to pay the usual £20 photo card licence fee, they will benefit from receiving their DQC free of charge, which could save them up to £30 over the 10 year photocard licence period.
Rosemary Thew, DSA chief executive said:
“We’re urging drivers to exchange their paper licence sooner rather than later. As well as saving money, drivers holding a photo card licence will receive their DQC automatically when they have passed the Driver CPC initial qualification or completed 35 hours of periodic training.”
Those drivers leaving the exchange of their licence until after they have completed their training may risk a delay in receiving their DQC.
Drivers can apply to exchange their licence online or by post or they can drop off their application at DVLA local offices and selected Post Office® branches. For more information on how to exchange your paper licence visit direct.gov.uk/exchangelicence
